You may even type out an instruction paper for the new cat owner. Ask for their phone number so you can call in two weeks to check on the cat etc. Or take the cat to them for a visit so you can view the environment. Thanks for being so responsible.
No one can make you.
I'd ask them where they live, proof that pets are accepted, their history with pets including how long they lived, why they died or were given away, who their vet is,
for references, for a deposit of $50 or so that you will
use to get the kitten it's 1st round of vaccinations before relinquishing it. Also ask about small children and how they will protect the cat and child from injuries. Will they only allow supervised time together until the child is old enough to know and respect the animal's welfare?
THEN check out what they say. Call their home, call their apt. complex, call the vet. Most people who are not going to care for the animal will NOT forfit the $50 to get the cat checked out and it's 1st round of vaccines. IF they balk
or cannot afford it, chances are they will not take good care of the cat. (Even if they are on a restricted income and will eventually take the cat to a clinic for it's shots, etc, to come up with a one time fee of whatever the vet charges for that 1st visit will not be a hardship for someone who plans to care for an animal. They can
pay it once for sure.) Or if you prefer, take the animal to the vet yourself and have the vet bill for it's 1st visit and shots and insist on them paying it before taking the kitten.
That will certainly discourage those who don't have the
cats interest in mind. Plus you will insure the cat has a good start. Please do not EVER give a cat away for FREE..that attracts the freaks. (And you literally ARE giving it away for free if you take it to the vet 1st and insist they pay the bill before taking the pet....they aren't paying FOR the cat, but for it's initial care, so it's not like
you are making $$ on the cat or anything. You are just
literallly buying "insurance" that the cat will be cherished.
Thats what I'd do at least.
You get that vibe TELL them you know what? I changed my mind sorry. OR sorry the last one to give away just left with the last person.
ASK ALL questions. In fact ask so many, get that vibe and tell them you will call them next litter.
These are living creatures. They are YOUR living creatures. BE PICKY. BE FIRM.
theres nothing wrong with refusing just find a way to get their # and say that there is another family interestet or that you are not sure ur going to give it away for sure but ur looking for homes just incase.
