• Nobody waives interest. You have to ask for an abatement of the penalties...and they may or may not give it to you.


  • Pay your taxes on time.

    If you're paying late, you're probably going to have penalties and interest. Really the only way I can think of to get around these penalties is to write a protest letter explaining why you're paying late, and nicely ask for the penalties and interest to be waived. It helps if you say that this is the first time it has happened and it'll never happen again, etc. etc. etc. It's a long shot, but the worst thing that could happen is that they say no. Make sure you check in regularly though, because they may charge you more penalties and interest in the meantime while they're processing your letter.

    Another option is to do an offer in compromise, but this is usually only meant for if you owe a LOT of money and are on the verge of bankruptcy.
