Will I really see much difference using the hard drives you suggested compared to what I have listed?
Is there really much diff between the 165 and 170?
as to OS if you want 64bit i believe Suse Enterprise 64bit has the best support particularly for drivers as that's the #1 issue i see with 64bit OSes, hardware driver compatibility.
for 32bit any is good i think... i only use winxp pro sp2 on my opterons at home as they aren't server pcs heh
as to drives on the right motherboard supporting SATAII SATA300 with NCQ the hitachi 7k80 would do alot better keeping table locking in mysql to minimum with faster fisks too i guess - while talking about that faster memory bandwidth would help with mysql and opteron 170 @2000mhz would have slightly higher bandwidth than 165 @1800mhz even if same 200HTT :)
Looks good to me but 7200.9 don't seem to be that much of an improvement you'd be better off for db server at least with
4x 80GB Hitachi 7K80 SATAII NCQ raid 10
or
4x 74GB Raptor 10k rpm SATA raid 10
For the price you might want to get Opteron 170 instead ?
what OS ya going with ?
